I recently met with a dentist that was given the `pitch' from a sirona sales team member; I have to tell you it looked great! Well packaged, great testimonials and the ROI! Wow!. Something did not really sit right in the numbers as it seemed just little to aggressive on the return side for the dentist.

As a digital technology and manufacturing centre only we thought it would be great to explore all workflow options from our perspective. We have access to financial experts (CGA's) business professionals and other related professionals specializing in workflow and logistics. I suppose we are somewhat biased as we feel that a dental lab plays an essential role in providing the correct material and product recommendations coupled with unmatched artistry for an asethically correct and long lasting restoration.

The purpose of this exercise is to create awareness only, to empower dentists with information prior to making decision for an intraoral solution.
It might just be a Sirona Cerec AC, or a Cadent Itero or a 3M C.O.S or new solutions - or maybe just keep current state? lets drill down into some solutions together.

The first question you would have to ask yourself is?
What is my value proposition for my practice? Is my core competency

Patients visit the dentist for a variety of reasons
Four possible reasons are hygiene, alleviation of pain, esthetics or replacement (which may result from necessity, esthetics or both).

Dentists can create the most value for patients by alleviating pain, but it is likely that the practice is built on hygiene, cosmetic dentistry or replacement. Dentists need to ask themselves what type of dentist they are, and what type of dentist they would like to be in the future. In other words, how do dentists create value for patients?

Stronger-than-steel palladium glass paves way for dental implants of the future
By Christopher Trout posted Jan 12th 2011 8:13PM A team of researchers at Caltech and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have created a new type of glass that's stronger than steel, but it might not make it out of your oral surgeon's office.

The material is a combination of glass' simplest form, called marginal glass, the metal palladium, and small fractions of phosphorus, silicon, germanium, and silver, making it resistant to massive amounts of pressure and strain. A glass this strong has endless potential in the way of structural application -- think cars, planes, and bridges. Thing is, though, palladium is super expensive, and researchers involved in the project say the best applications are in products like dental implants, which are currently made of soft, stiff noble metals, more likely to cause complications like bone atrophy. Chances are we won't see super strong glass bridges anytime soon, but the new glass dental implants could be in your mouth as early as 2016.

This was an extremely exciting collaborative initiative spearheaded by Karl Schoeman of Biomet 3i. The solution was a complete success bringing together a local leading edge dentist, a local dental lab, a technology centre and 3Shape distributor Kastle Mills, partnering with 3M ESPE and Biomet 3i.

Solution: Advanced Digital Productivity and Accuracy. To Intraoral Scan, Data Mark, Design 3i Encode Abutment on 3Shape (and manufacture) Design 3M Lava Restoration for abutment and create digital SLA Viper models all digitally at separate locations - interdependent
All Parties work from the datamarked Intraoral Scan Simultaneously and deliver products to one location, Kastle Mills, within the scope of less than a week!`ideal'

Conclusion: This was a seamless exercise of just how powerful and accurate Intraoral scanners can be.
To date we have never witnessed such a smooth flow of information - digital information that was actually transformed into precision medical devices. When you think about it, it is really amazing, digital information and measurements travelling across countries in real time coupled with leading edge technology to create these devices. When these products all come together from thousands of miles apart they all fit perfectly.

Side Notes: The Gold Nitride coated 3i Encode was a surgical work of art!

Please note that any other Encode (or any abutment case for that matter) other than this particular Intraoral beta case would undergo a complex labour intesive process or series of steps. Steps that would likely lead to an accurate final product but less accurate than this Intraoral scanning process that was achieved with 3i. Although beta - this is a real case! and a real solution on a go forward as we step from a conventional approach of dentistry into digital dentistry. Accuracy, Control, Quality and Speed were demostrated with this digital process.
